LADIES AND GENTLEMEN SALON SPA WINS CHAIN STORE AGE MAGAZINE'S "RETAIL STORE OF THE YEAR" DESIGN COMPETITION

Ed and Nancy Brown, owners of Ladies and Gentlemen Salon Spa in Lyndhurst, OH. had a wonderful reason to celebrate this past holiday season. they received a letter from Murray Forseter, publisher/editor of Chain Store Age magazine's 2004 "retail Store of the year design competition"

The application was entered by Herschman Architects, the team who worked on the Brown's new salon & spa, located in an upscale lifestyle mall in Legacy Village, just east of Cleveland, OH. Ladies and Gentlemen looks like an anchor store thanks to it's excellent corner location and the buildings unique curved glass wall. The attention grabbing signage, featuring a halo-lit external sign as well as an internally illuminated rotating sign, all add to make an impression before one even steps foot inside.

Upon entering, guests are greeted by a hostess and have an opportunity to browse the 900 square foot Aveda retail store. The design objective was to create a an edgy, yet organic atmosphere where the customer eagerly anticipates their salon & spa services. That was achieved by creating floating 12 foot ceilings and an open structure which draws the customer through the salon. Walnut stained woodwork creates visual interest by defining the shampoo area with a series of posts and beams. Clients recline in comfortable Takara Belmont chairs for an ultra relaxing shampoo experience. Stainless steel counters with built in punch through light boxes covered with frosted glass, serve as a color bar in the salon area so that clients are part of the mixing experience. "Because all of our stylist are also colorists, we decided not to have a separate room," explains Nancy. "we wanted to clients to be a part of the mixing experience, to celebrate color by keeping it out in the open."In addition to the 16 styling stations, there are five treatment rooms in the spa, three pedicure stations featuring European Touch chairs (the Rolls Royce of pedicure chairs) and four manicure stations. The beautiful spa lounge features deep red silk-like fabric covering the wall, a slate fireplace, maple wood flooring and a contemporary glass chandelier. Burnt orange and cream walls with large off-white porcelain tiles create a fresh atmosphere in the manicure and pedicure rooms: the salon i is bright and playful while the spa lighting is soft and relaxing. Glowing acrylic stars hang from the ceiling  in a room devoted to children called The Kid Next Door. The walls are apple green and there are video games and movies at each styling station.

"We changed the floor plan 19 different times, " said Nancy. "We wanted to get so much into the space and make it all work." The spa and salon together total 5,100 square feet. This location marks the second Ladies & Gentlemen establishment. Northeast of Lyndhurst in Mentor, OH, the Brown's own another 13,000 square foot salon spa and a new 10,000 square foot Aveda Brown Institute, a cosmetology and esthiology school. Future plans include opening another Institute in rocky River, OH.
